Vassiliki Village
Vassiliki village is
situated on a wide bay on the south coast of Lefkas, in north-west Greece. The
village of Vasiliki itself is on the Eastern side of the bay while the Western
side of the bay is called Ponti.
Vassiliki is fairly quiet at the start and end of the summer season, but really comes to life in July and August when it is recognized as one of the windsurfing capitals of Europe. The bay is wide and sheltered, and is noted for it's afternoon wind known as 'Eric'. On a good day, the sight of hundreds of windsurfers speeding across the water is spectacular. Vassiliki has gained legendary status amongst windsurfers as one of the best windsurfing spots in the Med.
Swimming
The beach alongside the Bay is mainly pebble with sandy parts, and is gently shelved. From the village you can also walk Southwards along the coastal path to the beach of Agiofili. This beach can also be reached by taxi boat during the summer season. Lefkada claims one of the world’s greatest sandy beaches and turquoise waters on the west coast of the island. From Vassiliki one can organize great excursions around the island and discover some really precious jewels of natural beauty.
Entertainment
The village of Vassiliki itself is not large. It retains a lot of it's older buildings. There is a very pleasant harbor front area with pavement cafes, restaurants and ice cream shops. The harbor is a popular stopping off point for yachts and flotillas, and is also a boarding point for the ferry to Kefalonia and Ithaka in the main summer season.
There are several bars, tavernas and restaurants, and one night club with greek music. Do not miss 155 cocktail bar for an unforgettable Mohito, or any other of the 60 memorable all time classic cocktail suggestions.
There are nο banks, but several ATM machines around the village and money should not be a worry. Other facilities in the village include a Police Station, Medical Centre, Post Office, Bakery and Petrol Station. There is a public bus service to Lefkada Town, which varies in frequency throughout the year. There are almost no buses on a Sunday.
Activities
Vassiliki is famous for trekking and exploring walking paths as well as bicycling in the flat bay and valley area as well as in the surrounding hills and mountains, that have become vary favorite destinations for the more extreme bikers. Vassiliki however is best known for it's watersports - especially windsurfing and catamaran - and this is the place to learn. Huge numbers of windsurfers take advantage of the bay which, thanks to local geography, is often calm in the mornings and windy in the afternoons. The beach is stony and rough, though ideal for surfers as it is just thigh deep for many meters out to the sea. The busiest months are July and August when the bay is packed with windsurfers.
Other activities include diving and kayaking, as well as more alternative options such as Yoga classes that run in several clubs as well as botanology seminars and so on.
